Institution: Jefferson High School--Los Angeles, California
Funded by: The Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department
This installation, located within the lobby of inner city high school auditorium, is comprised of architectural inscriptions and an image continuum that contains photographs of prominent graduates such as Dexter Gordon, Alvin Ailey and Ralph Bunch, Nobel Peace Prize winner. These role models are presented as photographs interspersed with mirrors---so that a student will encounter his or er reflection, illuminating the possibility of similar achievement.
The installation complements the Streamline Moderne architecture of the building, restoring a sense of dignity and purpose to this embattled educational environment. Constructed of aluminum, neon illumination, hand-cut aluminum letterforms, mounted photographs and mirrors.
